Why are the alleles for Tay-Sachs disease and PKU still presnt in the human population?

Natural selection tends to select against deadly genetic disorders such as Tay-Sachs disease, and PKU. If this is the case, why are the alleles for these types of disorders still present in the human population? what attributes must these alleles posses for them to still be present?
