Why would Whoopie defend Mel Gibson?

The last time he was caught, he was yelling nasty slurs about the Jews. This time it's said to be racist slurs against the Blacks. (I figured that he used the racist 'N' word that was beeped out). Whoopie is suppose to be a Jew, and her skin color is definitely brown. "Friend" of hers or not, how could she not see that she's included in the the latest group that Mel has verbally attacked and insulted ? Would you consider a bigot like that who hurled racist insults against your people (or any people) to be your friend?
