In the movie Rudy.....?

There is a scene where Rudy is trying to get a ticket to the first Notre Dame home game. Rudy also works as part of the grounds crew at Notre Dame. Would he not have been allowed into the stadium during the game as part of the grounds crew? If so, why would he need to buy a ticket.
